Royal Copenhagen is internationally known for exploring and expanding the potential of porcelain. Now the porcelain factory launches the ground-breaking new concept “Function”, which fusions terrific design and world-class functionality.

The Function series consists of functional and aesthetic items for the kitchen and the table. And with the new concept Royal Copenhagen opens the door to all the kitchens where aesthetic and good taste are given pride of place. In an inviting and minimalistic mode of expression, Function tells the story of modern design and the many famous dinner services, which Royal Copenhagen has created for generations. Featured in all of the series’ parts, are the decorative flutes that were actually used for the first time in 1775 on the Blue Fluted service. Since then, they have been Royal Copenhagen’s unique feature.

<

Among other things, the series offers a decorative lemon squeezer in white porcelain, where the fluting has been enlarged and inverted so they can effectively squeeze the juice out of oranges and lemons. The series’ elegant wine set, which comprises corkscrew and wine stopper also sends sophisticated compliments to the fluted look. The white porcelain handle of the corkscrew is bedecked with the decorative fluting. The same is true of the delicate porcelain sphere that constitutes the top of the wine stopper.

As well as having an aesthetic effect, the fluting ensures that the handle and top do not slip unnecessarily while in use.

Add to this a bowl in white fluted porcelain equipped with the soft silicone cover from Royal Copenhagen’s popular Contrast mug. Silicon has both a functional and aesthetic effect because it both provides insulation and contrast to the hard white porcelain with the decorative colours of mother of pearl and purple. The bowl is perfect for everything from dressing to nuts and sweets.

Furthermore, the series gathers together some of Royal Copenhagen’s most popular kitchen items such as the sculptural white spice jars in White Fluted porcelain for the aesthetic cook. The 11 cm tall white cylinders are designed to store herbs and spices so that they keep their flavour. The cylinders each have a narrow band that identifies their contents in clear, white letters. The set is available as six spice jars on a small tray. The spice jars may also be purchased individually to accommodate an expanding collection of herbs and spices.

Furthermore, the ground-breaking Contrast mugs are being launched in pink and orange colours.

The Function series also offers attractive aprons and tea towels.

Recognised worldwide for combining tradition and renewal, and for superb craftsmanship, Royal Copenhagen’s Easter decorations this year consist of four delicate new Easter eggs and a decorated goose egg in clear white porcelain. These lovely eggs are adorned with some of the prettiest motifs showing the symbols of spring: the forget-me-nots, white anemones and daffodils, or chaffinches and blue-tits in exquisite colours are poetic reminders that spring is on the way.

A historic tribute

The poetic floral decoration of the eggs is a direct reference to the unrivalled craftsmanship of Royal Copenhagen’s most distinguished design. The flower motifs have been taken from sources like the legendary Flora Danica service, one of the most exclusive in the world.

“Easter is a festival that marks the new life of spring, so it is a welcome opportunity to hang lovely decorations in our homes. That is why it is important to us that our Easter eggs are in keeping with our traditions as well as announcing that spring is just around the corner. But at the same time we want to pay tribute to Royal Copenhagen’s artistic heritage, so we have searched the archives to find the motifs we have chosen for this year’s Easter eggs,” says creative director Niels Bastrup.

Decorations with personality

With an idiom that neatly combines charming design with evocative tradition, Royal Copenhagen has created these small, poetic decorations for everyone wanting to give their homes a personal touch with an element of history. The delicate spring colours are carefully chosen to tone in and harmonise with collections from earlier years. The smaller eggs can be hung on twigs among the bursting buds or prettily arranged in bowls. The larger goose egg, which is about 10cm high, has a longer ribbon, and can be hung in a window or placed in a bowl or dish with the other porcelain eggs. The attractive bonbonnière can be used for chocolates or biscuits, as a flower-pot holder or as a decoration on the window sill. All prices are recommended retail prices.

Many renowned artists have collaborated with Royal Copenhagen over the years, building up a fascinating collection of unique art pieces along the way. Nine pieces are offered for sale, made by Carl-Henning Pedersen, Jens Birkemose and Ivan Weiss, at prices from DKK 1,000 to DKK 60,000 for a lovely slip-decorated vase by Carl Henning Pedersen. From Ivan Weiss’s hand there are two hand-thrown bowls with ox-blood glaze fired in a coal-fuelled kiln, and a barium-glazed bowl that highlights the fine blue colour. Jens Birkemose’s work is known for the characteristic “dripping” glaze and the colour transitions, which are clearly shown on the two bowls and the large vase. The colourful decorations on the pieces by the CoBrA painter, Carl-Henning Pedersen, reflect his imaginative approach to his art. Carl-Henning Pedersen’s pieces are all slip–decorated ceramics.

More works by exciting artists will be added regularly to the selection.
