At Formland Autumn 2009 the MCH Herning Fairs presents Normann Copenhagen, particularly Hang – a lamp designed by Rikke Hagen, who has combined form, function and aesthetics in a simple design. Hang is a part of the New Danish Modern, which are Danish designs and Danish production. The expression is a significantly shaped classical piece.

The inspiration behind Hang is retro forms that make Hang a classic design object that fits most homes. It is timeless and the epitome of design traditions that we are proud of in Denmark.

<

When we speak of Danish design, we speak often about function, aesthetics and form. Precisely these properties make Hang a good example. Hang is very simple and has a more functional than decorative expression. I think that is liberating, because if the lamp can wear it alone, it is complete. It is not postulated. It is what it is, explains Rikke Hagen.

Hang is produced using traditional methods of production of a metal printing on Amager. It’s glossy exterior and matt interior comes in black and white and in two sizes.

New Danish Modern is a new line from Normann Copenhagen, which has roots in the Danish design tradition where quality and attention to detail is a priority. The line is designed by Denmark’s best designers and is exclusively produced in Denmark with care for the design idea and crafts design. The concept is based on furniture art, so the line will be available in smaller productions.

Besides Rikke Hagen is currently supporting these Danish designers with the New Danish Modern: Ole Jensen, Jesper K. Thomsen, Søren Ulrik Petersen, Claydies, Peter Johansen & Thomas Bentzen and others.

Holmegaard has commissioned two exciting women designers to show us their vision of lamp design for tomorrow. Minimalism and humour are keywords for the new generation designers with an unfailing sense of style as they follow in the footsteps of Verner Panton and Piet Hein.

Rikke Hagen and Maria Kariis, are taking a fresh look at the powerfully traditional heritage of lamp design at Holmegaard, produced in collaboration with the grand old men of Danish lighting, Verner Panton and Piet Hein. Although the two women designers produce individual lamps with different expressions, there are some common characteristics in the next generation of designer lamps: they both refer back to earlier classics in a stringent form language, adding a subtle touch of humour.

Award-winning Rikke Hagen and the futuristic power lamp
Steam is the name Rikke Hagen has given to her futuristic table lamp, which communicates power in plenty. In the award-winning designer’s own words: ”The keywords with this new lamp have been to capture power and energy in their basic forms. Because the very essence of light is energy. I drew lots of lines, which I ended up by simplifying – until only simplicity is left.

Steam plays with the basic form of the table lamp, but has been totally purged of all superfluous detail. On the other hand, the current or the cable that is normally concealed has been made into part of the installation: a bold turquoise cable, swinging its way out from inside the lamp. Talking of her collaboration with Holmegaard Glassworks, which is steeped in traditions, and has produced hand-blown glass since 1825, Rikke Hagen says: “As a designer, I see it as my primary objective to plant myself solidly in Holmegaard’s impressive aesthetic history and continue building with all the material I find there. So I chose the smoked grey and opal white colours for Steam, because those are just the colours Holmegaard is famous for. Then I pepped them up with the audacious turquoise cable. The vibrant, cool blue goes perfectly with the smoke and white shades.”

Maria Kariis with the epoch-making ball lamp
With her new pendant light, O2, designer Maria Kariis has created a groundbreaking design with a humorous twinkle in its eye. The circular shape is a salute to the classic ball lamp that we all know so well. The round openings on each side of the lamp reveal the bulb and the air space around it – and give the lampshade its name. This is how the Swedish designer Maria Kariis explains her design: “I wanted to create a spherical lamp that was different: simple, but with a soul and a personality, a little exposed, but proudly showing off its source of light. The lamp changes its expression, depending on where you are in the room: it is both open and closed.”

The apertures in 02 suggest humorous associations with the soft retro shapes of the 70s and space-inspired design. Maria Kariis continues: “The soft, round ball shape has a circular hole in the side, which reveals the warm, shiny inside. It causes variations in the intensity of the light. I am fascinated by the contrasts between the hardness and softness, the warm glass, the light and the cold metal. That is what brings the form to life.”

The two designers
Maria Kariis (1971) studied industrial design at Beckman’s School of Design, graduating in 1998, and has also studied at the University College of Arts, Crafts and Design. Since 1998 she has run her own design studio. In 2006, she was affiliated with Holmegaard Glassworks as a designer.

Rikke Hagen (1970) qualified in 1998 as a glass designer at Danmarks Designskole. She has her own glass workshop and has been awarded several grants and awards for her unique, bold designs. Rikke Hagen has been associated with Holmegaard Glassworks since 2001.

More than 2,500 products from 43 countries were entered for this category.

Each year, an international jury examines and assesses the products sent in according to criteria like: degree of innovation, functionality and quality. This conscientious and critical assessment of the products entered ensures the necessary seriousness, and the “Red Dot” award has gained considerable international recognition.

At LE KLINT they are naturally honoured and proud to receive this acclaim, which underlines once again that LE KLINT holds a strong leading position when it comes to good design. It also underlines very clearly how important it is to remain true to our ideals and concentrate all our energy on what we are doing, both in product development and at the manufacturing stage.

365° north is a new Danish lamp concept – a concept that has been turned both 90° and 180° to see the familiar from new and unexpected angles. This has now resulted in a unique and original lamp design which is about to be launched on the Danish and other European markets.

This is what often happens when ideas are carefully considered before being transformed into products. Consumers suddenly find themselves holding things in their hands that speak to them in a comforting, yet slightly exciting way.

365° are lamps which accentuate design and balance. Their lightness and purity are reminiscent of trustworthy, yet innovative Scandinavian design. The lamps are both hard and soft, portentous and humorous. You could almost say that 365° north has mixed grandmother with business and masculine with feminine in a durable, classical and innovative way.

The Gravity lamp was nominated for the Danish interiors magazine Bo Bedre’s Furniture Award 2007, presented at Copenhagen International Furniture Fair.

365° north is sold and distributed by Frandsen Lyskilde.

The lamps will be sold in shops this autumn 2007.

Design Miami/Basel, the most prominent and substantive forum for international design, has named Swedish design collective Front its 2007 Designer of the Future.

In recognition of the award, Front will present an on-site installation of their cutting-edge work that will feature prototypes of a new collection, Magical, commissioned exclusively for Design Miami/Basel.

150 major designers were asked to submit candidates for the second annual Designer of the Future Award. The Selection Committee, made up of influential members of the international design community, chose Front from the top seven candidates. The Designer of the Future Award complements the Designer of the Year award given at Design Miami/Basel in December. The award gives the recipient the unique opportunity to exhibit alongside the most reputable designers and design galleries in the world – giving them high visibility and immediate access to the most influential members of the international design community.

Design Miami/Basel will take place in the Markthalle, Basel, Switzerland. The Markthalle is the third largest dome in Europe and a local landmark with almost 6,000 m2 of floor space.

’Wait for me’ is a floor lamp that combines the horizontal and the vertical surface in a space. ‘Wait for me’ is a short story about a hard working lamp, who runs around town together with its other light buddies and lights up the dark corners where the sun can’t reach.

In the evening the lamp takes a well deserved brake. ‘Wait for me’ visits people in their home, leans against the wall, puts the cable in the plug in order to recharge for the next day and throw light on the surroundings. Maybe ‘Wait for me’ will stop by your home one day……..

FurnID is an ambitious design office, consisting of Morten Kjær Stovegaard, Bo Strange and Sara Vinther Martinsen. They are determined to achieve their common goal, to succeed in the design business with a vision to create inviting and friendly products.
The design office is mostly engaged with furniture- and industrial design and so far they have worked together with Fritz Hansen, Engelbrechts, PLOT, B.I.G, GN Resound and Illums Bolighus.

From the beginning, the three designers agreed on designing friendly and sculptural products. FurnIDtable was the first furniture in a line of inviting products. Ever since it seemed obvious to carry on with the inviting concept and make it a special trademark for FurnID.

There are many excellent ideas in the desk drawer waiting to be completed, but the designers also express a strong desire to join forces with the manufacturers at an early stage in the design process. This way you get a viable product which also match the specific company.

Valdemar Hougaard Madsen (Maskiningeniør – Danmarks Tekniske Universitet).
