Serenata is a pocket-sized music mobile phone with an organic rounded design. “I often take long walks by the sea where I live”, explains Bang & Olufsen designer David Lewis, “and the shape of the nicely rounded stones that are washed to shore has always fascinated me. These stones have been carefully shaped and rounded by rolling in the water for millions of years, and they are so wonderful to hold in your hand. This was what I was looking for.”

Intuitive user interface
The unique music phone’s sound quality and elegant design does not compromise the ease of use. The click wheel navigation gives users hassle-free control of music functions.

“The basic idea is simplicity and one-hand operation. There are very few actual keys. We use the wheel for all primary operation in the context sensitive menus, like dialling, writing and accessing the music lists. For secondary operation, the wheel is supported by on-screen operation based on sensi-touch technology”, explains Bang & Olufsen Chief designer David Lewis.
To assist the user throughout, the display changes colour depending on whether it is in Phone mode (blue) or Music mode (red). Furthermore, the large 2.4-inch colour LCD display developed by Samsung allows Serenata to show album covers in an excellent resolution and facilitates on-screen navigation. “Besides the colour-coding and intuitive user interface, we try to help the first-time user with a 4-minute simulation tutorial, which is played in the display, explaining some of the most frequently-used functionality”, Bang & Olufsen Business Manager Brian Laursen explains.

To enhance the usability, Bang & Olufsen has developed BeoPlayer, a simple software that can access and organise all music files on the PC and conveniently transfer them to Serenata. Music that sounds right
Being a core competence of Bang & Olufsen, it comes natural for us to put emphasis on the acoustic performance of a music player. BeoSound 6 is based on a robust Samsung platform with specific acoustic refinements such as the high performance on signal-to-noise. Simple and elegant design
BeoSound 6 offers an almost minimalistic design where the front and rear sides are surrounded by a stainless steel frame. The rear side features a black soft-touch lacquered surface whereas the front side has a black LCD display with a simple graphical user interface and a keypad placed underneath the display. The rectangular touchpad is used for menu navigation and the surrounding keypad, made of black silicone rubber, is primarily for playback functions.

When you switch on the music player, you are offered an overview of five user scenarios, accessible with the touch of a button. The five scenarios make it possible to start immediate playback of the tracks downloaded to the music player, or sort the personal music collection by artist, album, genre and play list. While playing music, the user can choose between having the cover art of the specific album displayed alone or with music tags.

The user experience is further enhanced by the extended battery life, allowing up to 40 hours of playback – more than twice the market standard for battery life. The user can always follow the battery status, as the navigation bar indicates with a colour change when the battery needs to be charged.

With the new Beo5 remote control, we take the next step: Bang & Olufsen introduces a fully-flexible and personalized remote that can handle operation of any product combination, even products with features and functions that we do not know yet.

“Although Beo5 is an entirely new and revolutionising remote control, operation remains based on principles our customers know. This was very important to us,” states CEO Torben Ballegaard Sørensen. “We stick to the extensive experience with user interfaces which we have obtained over the years, so operating your equipment remains as relevant, simple and intuitive as possible; with Beo5 we simply added complete flexibility”.

Every customer has his own fully personalised remote control
It sounds simple, and it is. Beo5 is delivered without any features from the Bang & Olufsen factory, but is customised professionally before reaching the customer’s home. Our unique distribution network has been thoroughly trained and educated in how to configure Beo5 to match the individual needs of the customer, giving him or her complete control of the set-up at home.
Beo5 can be adapted to almost any product set-up you have in your home. You can add or remove buttons and functions. You can move buttons to suit, for example, left-handed use. You can combine control of your audio/video equipment with other remote-controlled systems such as light, curtains, windows, air-condition or security – and still be in full control while resting comfortably in your favourite armchair.

Ease-of-use through logical and intuitive operation
Beo5 has a new LCD colour display with a programmable touch-sensitive screen of chemically hardened front glass. This lets you activate functions that are relevant for your particular product combination by pressing directly on the screen.

The technology behind the operation of the display is a combination of two different types of touch operation: Sensi-touch – where you detect the button, and Soft-touch – where you physically activate a function by pressing down. We call it Touch-and-Go. There are 12 of these so-called dynamic buttons that can be named or moved around as the customer pleases.

A new visual stand point
When you leave Beo5 on the table, its form calls for your attention; it stands out and stands up, and you always know where it is. The unusual visual expression of Beo5 is a contradiction in forms – the circle and the square. The circular aluminium ball, with its tactile keys and volume wheel, combined with the square glass display and its soft-touch keys.

“The designer found inspiration in an ancient symbolic sign of power and control: the sceptre”, explains Product Manager Torben Kyed. “The ball like the sceptre rests securely in your hand, and the display is the ornament that is often seen on top of the sceptre”.

Rests safely in the palm of your hand
A lot of effort has been put into the ergonomics of Beo5. Extensive user tests have shown that the three-dimensional shape of the ball and the design of the rear secure a solid grip and also reduce the distance your thumb has to travel to reach the outermost corners of the remote control. Another important element is the correct weight and balance, which are secured by placing a tungsten weight inside the ball. Materials are carefully selected to underline the importance of craftsmanship and robustness.

Intelligent rechargeable remote control
Having a colour LCD display and a multitude of programmable features means you need up to 1,000 times more battery capacity than more simple remote controls. As we do not want to change batteries every 3 hours, we decided to go for a rechargeable remote control.
Beo5 should be treated in much the same way as you treat a cordless telephone from Bang & Olufsen. Put it back in the charger in intervals of no more than 10-12 days, and the batteries will always be charged. The intelligent charging circuitry will constantly optimise the life of the Beo5 batteries.

Robustness is essential
The display has a custom-made hardened glass front, with a thickness and grinding specified by the designer to ensure elegance and optimum robustness, but without sharp edges that can cut fingers. It has a robust rear part of infrared-transparent plastic to ensure the excellent signal range that Bang & Olufsen customers are accustomed to.

Besides this, Beo5 undergoes strict mechanical tests, such as tolerance to hand-lotion, scratch testing, temperature extremes and severe drop tests to ensure that the durability and robustness is as high or higher than existing remote controls from Bang & Olufsen. So you need not worry if you drop it on the floor – just pick it up again and you’re back in control!

DVD 2 is Bang & Olufsen’s solution for DVD playback, recording and permanent archiving. It supports a broad range of media formats, and the picture quality is among the best. It supports the TV programme guide Guide Plus+, which makes it possible to programme a recording directly from the information on the TV screen. Recordings are made to the built-in hard disc, and the built-in tuner supports simultaneous recording and playback of the same TV programme.

Designer David Lewis has emphasised its affinity with the modular home cinema solutions from Bang & Olufsen by introducing a design that matches other components in the system. The front, top and sides are made of brushed aluminium which is divided by a groove for status information with the stand-by indicator on the front.

The loading of the DVD is done by pressing lightly on the upper part of the front aluminium bar, which opens outwards and down, revealing the loader that quietly slides out. Behind this bar you find sockets for connection of additional equipment, such as a digital camera or video camera.

Playback, archiving and browsing the programme guide is all done with the Bang & Olufsen remote control.

But DVD 2 is more than a DVD player. The Guide Plus+ programme guide presents TV programming information for the coming days, and using your Bang & Olufsen remote control you can quickly browse through programmeinformation, as well as set timed recordings without having to enter the channel and time information yourself.

The built-in hard disc recorder takes care of your temporary recordings by recording TV programmes from the built-in tuner, which in turn makes it possible to record one TV programme while watching another.

DVD 2 delivers high-end picture quality via its High Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) output. When connected to the Bang & Olufsen top TV engine, BeoSystem 3, it gives you outstanding sharpness and true-to-life colour rendition of digital video for your home cinema experiences.
