A new Danish designed children’s cutlery, ToddlerTable Cutlery, was named as the winner of the Formland Design Award – Autumn 2009 on Friday morning. Two Copenhagen-based companies, Fabrikators and ToddlerCompany, have designed the winning product and during the opening of the Formland Fair at MCH Messecenter Herning they were awarded DKK 100,000 as a marketing contribution and an award statuette as the visible proof of the Scandinavian award.

ToddlerTable Cutlery is designed by Josefine Bentzen. The designer has placed emphasis on creating cutlery that supports the children’s development of motor skills. The cutlery was designed on the basis of the special way children grasp things. The Scandinavian Award Committee who are responsible for the choice of winner gave the following reasons:

<

“This is the child’s own cutlery. The design is good with a handle that fills the whole hand. The design, combined with an anti-slide material on the handle, means that the child has a good grip on the cutlery, which can quickly help to make eating themselves a good experience. The colours are spot on and the expression is unique. The cutlery is playful, practical and very attractive – it looks good on a well-laid table. And it is also made of environmentally friendly material. A new, obvious idea for a christening present.

The recommended retail price for ToddlerTable Cutlery is DKK 299. The children’s cutlery can be seen at stand C2710 at the Formland Fair.

The other nominees for the Formland Design Award were EGO with a bamboo collection, Eva Denmark with Eva Trio kitchenware, PK Design – Design House Stockholm with the Arrow hook and Hornvarefabrikken with the Anines vases. A total of 70 products were submitted for judging at the Formland Design Award – Autumn 2009.

The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design and The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies jointly announce the winning buildings and product designs from a special edition of the GOOD DESIGN™ Awards program for 2009.

Founded in Chicago in 1950 by Eero Saarinen and Charles and Ray Eames, GOOD DESIGN remains the oldest and most established awards program for the most innovative and visionary new product design worldwide. For almost 60 years now, the Award has been given to everything and anything from a NASA space ship to a paper clip. In 2008, over 500 new product designs and graphics from over 33 nations were recognized with the distinguished GOOD DESIGN Award. The world’s most prominent FORTUNE 500 companies use the GOOD DESIGN logo in the branding of their products, which has become a strong and effective mark of public recognition of Design Excellence globally.

Past winners of the Museum’s historic program can be viewed at The Chicago Athenaeum’s website: www.chi-athenaeum.org.

In 2009 and on the eve of the 60-year anniversary of GOOD DESIGN, The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design and The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies (based in Dublin, Ireland) initiated a special edition of GREEN GOOD DESIGN AWARDS 2009.

GREEN GOOD DESIGN to focus on the most important new international products and buildings and construction and planning projects that are leading the global way to a design that is fully sustainable and compatible with the highest standards of good environment.

Landscape architecture, urban planning, architecture, and industrial and product designs from over twenty-three (23) nations were awarded in this first-year program: “Build A Better World Now.” Designs for buildings and products that emphasize the most advanced “Green Approach” and the most sophisticated methods and technology to make the most positive impact on the environment were cited and awarded.

The 108 awarded buildings and products for 2009 are to be exhibited at The European Centre’s Contemporary Space Athens (46-48 Megalou Vassilias, Rouf-Athens, Greece) July 8-August 31, 2009 and then form a traveling exhibition in Europe and The United States through 2010. The European Centre will publish the results in a special catalogue available in fall.

All 108 GREEN GOOD DESIGN awarded building and product designs for 2009 can be viewed at The European Centre’s website: www.europeanarch.eu.

Buildings and products from those nations include: Austria, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Great Britain, Greece, Italy, India, Ireland, Japan, Korea, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, Portugal, Singapore, Sweden, and The United States.

The United States and Germany led with greatest number of awards for the best “Green Design” followed by Japan, Canada, and Belgium.

Some of the world’s most advanced corporations leading the “Green Revolution” are recognized: Bosch und Siemens Hausgërate GmbH., BMW AG., Daimler AG., Grohe AG., Asko Cylinda AB., Johnsonite/Tarkett, Herman Miller, Gaggenau Hausgërate GmbH. adidas, Ford Motor Company, Microsoft Corporation, Steelcase, Inc., Electrolux AG,. Electrolux Zanussi Italia SpA., Coca-Cola, Mohawk Group, Timberland, Royal Caribbean International, Ernst & Young, Kimball International, and Whirlpool Corporation. Designs by the world’s most important international architecture and product design firms are also cited: Benisch Architkten, Richard Rogers, Yves Béhar, Philippe Samyn, Dominique Perrault, Bjarke Ingels, Kengo Kuma, Richard Meier, Jo Crepain, Peter Latz, Gorden Wagener, Peter Pfeiffer, Souto Moura Arquitectos, Christopher Bangle, Arup Group, HOK, Martin Ballendat, Gensler Architecture, Gustafson Porter, Niels Diffrient, NKS Architects, Dirk Linke, Robert A.M. Stern, and Skidmore, Owings & Merrill for such buildings and planning projects and product designs as Westergasbabrik Park in Amsterdam to South Waterfront Greenway Development Plan in Portland, Oregon and the World Wildlife Fund Headquarters in Zeist in The Netherlands to the stunning, energy-efficient Mercedes-Benz F700 Concept Car.

Cited governments and institutions for GREEN GOOD DESIGN 2009 include: Town of Nachod in Czech Republic; Government of Greece; Government of The Netherlands; Chicago Park District; City of Amsterdam; International Polar Foundation in Brussels; World Wildlife Federation in Rome and Zeist, The Netherlands; Dublin City Council; University of Cork; U.S. Environmental

Protection Agency; U.S. General Services Administration; U.S. National Park Service; City of Seattle; and Tulane University.

“We initiated this special Green Edition of the annual GOOD DESIGN program to emphasize the most profound and enlightening developments in this new world era of design for sustainability,” states Kieran Conlon, Director/COO, The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies from his office in Dublin, Ireland.

“In partnership with The Chicago Athenaeum, the idea is to bring into the international forefront the most important advances, pioneering design, management, manufacturing and building processes that can improve the world’s environmental quality and product quality while lowering the world’s environment and toxic discharges, minimizing the use of non-renewable resources, and reducing the use of renewable resources to sustainable levels,” Mr. Conlon added. “This is a public education outreach program of paramount purpose at a time when countries like the United States are changing their environmental perspective. We specially were interested in on focusing on industry, new technology, government, and the public.”

Hundreds of submissions from around the world were submitted for this first edition of GREEN GOOD DESIGN by architects,

developers, product designers, manufacturers, organizations, foundations, and general public. The submissions were reviewed and awarded by a jury comprised of the European Centre’s International Advisory Committee—leading experts in the fields of architecture, design, real-estate, and manufacturing from Europe, the United States, and Japan.

For GREEN GOOD DESIGN 2009, the entire nation of Sweden was awarded as the most “Green” country in the world and for the country’s lead in policies concerning energy consumption, waste management, green design research, life cycle impacts, commerce and industry, carbon footprinting, corporate responsibility, and public education.

The Headquarters for the Council of The European Union by Philppe Samyn and Partners in Brussels and Studio Valle Progettazioni Architects in Rome is a superb extension and refurbishment of the Residence Palace Building built between 1922 and 1927 that converts the L-shaped building into a glass “cube.” The new double façade, made of a harmonized patchwork of re-used wooden windows with simple crystal like single glazing becomes an acoustic barrier that offers thermal insulation while providing sustainable regeneration. Philippe Samyn’s International Polar Foundation Belgian Antarctic Base Prince Elisabeth takes a sustainable development approach with the intergration of renewable energy sources, optimsation of energy flows, optimization of materials and total waste management integrated into the design for the new research station located at 72° S 23E on the northern ridge of the Utsteinen Nunatak in the Sør Rondane Mountains of Antarctica.

Other prominent Green buildings awarded in clude new skyscrapers , corporate headquarters, museums, universities, educational buildings, research facilities, showrooms, libraries, apartment buildings, bus shelters, recycling centers, and private homes in

Dublin, Milan, Rotterdam, Copenhagen, Seoul, Paris, Santiago, Vancouver, Antwerp, Brussels, London, Calgary, Chicago, Seattle, New Orleans, New Delhi, Sao Pãolo, and New York.

Leading the awarded Green Products are new designs for furniture, lighting, washing machines, refrigerators, overs and cooktops, dishwashers, floorcovering, and packaging design that forward the principals of regeneration, energy efficiency, ecological

consequence, deforestation , and renewable energy while providing the latest and most innovative design.

“GOOD DESIGN” is not about color, style, impression, or trends but instead about thoughtfully considering the use and user of the product or building, the experience, the social and environmental context, and the impact a building or object has on the surrounding environment,” states Christian K. Narkiewicz-Laine, the Finnish architect and architecture and design critic and curator of the

historic GOOD DESIGN program. “Green Design is GOOD DESIGN. No design can be considered good design unless it attempts to address all these concerns. We believe in the original modernist ideology of the original GOOD DESIGN program as forwarded by Saarinen and Eames in 1950 that form and function are intertwined in design. Style and substance are not mutually exclusive.

Buildings and products are environmental,” he adds.

“Our current civilization,” states Mr. Narkiewicz-Laine, “is on the verge of the next revolution, larger than the Industrial Revolution of the 19th Century, in order to find and make our world the most sustainable and more energy-efficient and to eliminate negative environmental impact completely through skillful, sensitive design. GREEN GOOD DESIGN will blazon that international path.”

The deadline for submissions for the 2010 GREEN GOOD DESIGN Awards is November 1, 2009.

Applications for 2010 and more information is available on line at The European Centre’s website: www.europeanarch.eu

Hay, Normann, Muutos, Magis, Wooden Radio and Ego are just some of the 40 exhibitors who are chosen when Formland open up the doors in August with the design area New Note.

- It will be really exciting this year. There has been great interest in the New Note, and there are many interesting and innovative products and exhibitors. In addition, the visitors will experience a range of new and exciting alleged actions, says Mads Arlien-Søborg.

New Note is a collaboration between Formland and trend researcher Mads Arlien-Søborg. He is curator of the New Note and decide who will be exhibiting in the area. Criteria for New Notes is that designers and companies to present designs that stand out sharply, and has an international level.

- I have this time worked with the theme “Pure”, but took Farmer trend that has been very high in countries like England and USA. It’s about recovering authentic values of the country, which almost totally disappeared in our modern technology-based world. Trend comes originally from the food industry which include farmer-markets with fresh fruit, vegetables, meat and fish have sprouted up in cities like London and New York, says Mads Arlien-Søborg.

New Note will also give wildcards to design schools and schools of architecture, which presents student projects and exit projects.

As something new, the visitors could experience the “Pure White” – an exhibition of selected products from exhibitors at the New Note.

The Lounge area is this time made in cooperation with Boligmagasinet in the best camping style. Here you will be able to relax in rural surroundings, lie in the grass on a blanket, take a nap in the tents set or just enjoy themselves with a copy of Home magazine.

Formland Autumn 2009 MCH Herning Fairs will take place from 14 to 17. August.

We are familiar with the Swan label, the flower, and the organic label. We have now turned our attention to products for the home that are labelled Max Havelaar and Fair Trade. Consumers are increasingly moving from facts to feelings when they take products from shop shelves. More than ever, we shop with our hearts and never before has the interest in ecology, ethical commerce, and Fair Trade been greater. This can be experienced at Scandinavia’s biggest fair for home accessories, gifts, and design, Formland Spring 2008, from 1-4 February at MCH Messecenter Herning.

“Fair Trade and ecology have been hot internationally and among the famous for some time. We can now see that Danish consumer interest in these areas has risen quite considerably. Several of our exhibitors have begun to think in terms of Fair Trade in their shops and in their businesses. We have therefore directed focus towards organic products and Fair Trade as rapidly growing areas at the trend zone HOThouse,” relates Project Manager Lars Jespersen, MCH Messecenter Herning Kongrescenter.

Towels with social responsibility
Many of Formland’s exhibitors will recognise the picture. Textile company MOW Living is in the process of obtaining Fair Trade accreditation and expects to receive the Max Havelaar stamp of approval during the next six months.
“We are seeing tremendous interest in ecology and Fair Trade. This is gigantic in London and in Denmark we have found that consumers are looking for products that signal social responsibility. So it is excellent that the Formland Fair is now sharpening the focus on the subject and helping shops and buyers to pay more attention to Fair Trade,” says Kristian Jakobsen, owner of MOW Living.
In brief, Fair Trade involves fair prices, human rights, environment-friendly and sustainable production, in addition to improved conditions for farmers and producers in the world’s poorest countries.

Unique Japanese design at Formland
Japan’s answer to Dane Arne Jacobsen is Sori Yanagi. He is 92 and famous for mastering designs for bridge constructions, cars, motorways, and kitchen utensils. He has received the honour of designing the Olympic torch twice, has worked with Charles Eames, and is the man behind the Butterfly chair, which is accounted a masterpiece. In spite of his advanced age, he is still in full swing and his designs are on permanent display throughout the world, including at MoMa in New York and Tokyo as well as the Louvre in Paris. His products are now being exhibited at a fair in Scandinavia for the first time.
“We are exhibiting nine of his product collections at Formland. Visitors will be able to see porcelain, cutlery, and a series of cast-iron products by the Japanese master. We have just launched his products in Denmark and there is unusually widespread interest in them,” relates Director Thomas Baldur-Felskov, Gateway Japan ApS, which sells the Japanese products in Scandinavia.

Formland facts: Formland Spring 2008 takes places at MCH Messecenter Herning from 1-4 February. Formland is Scandinavia’s biggest trade fair for home accessories, gifts, and design with more than 600 exhibitors.

MCH Messecenter Herning will be filled with design, applied art, and interiors when Formland Spring 2008 opens on Friday 1 February. Scandinavia’s biggest trade fair for the industry will be attended by 625 exhibitors who present a large number of innovations for the spring season.

Of these, 48 exhibitors come from abroad – more than half of them from Sweden – while the others are distributed between Norway, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Ireland, and Spain. Formland is offering six trend zones with the latest trends, a new area entitled FASHION, and the large hardware hall with leading suppliers such as Rosendahl, Royal Copenhagen, and Eva Denmark.

“Formland Spring 2008 is the trade fair where visitors can see the latest trends and meet exhibitors from Denmark and abroad. One of the hottest themes in the retail trade right now is hybrid shops, and this can be seen among Formland’s exhibitors who will bring along a host of innovations in the fields of applied art, interiors, jewellery, handbags, and furniture,” relates Project Manager Lars Jespersen from MCH Messecenter Herning Kongrescenter.

Growing trends at Formland
Scandinavian design is flourishing at the trend zone HOThouse in Hall D under the influence of global cultures and local design. The trend bureau Eckmann Alive is in charge of the zone with a series of current Hot Spot themes – among them recycling, ecology, and ethical responsibility – themes that are illustrated through such means as exhibitors’ innovations and products. Another Formland trend zone is villAlive in Hall C. The house of the future was designed by TechnologyDenmark and can best be described as an experiment in lifestyle. The house breaks out of the square framework because it comprises two staggered ellipses one on top of the other. This offers families new options so they can spread out through five rooms. villAlive will be equipped with modern interiors during the Formland Fair.

The other trend zones at Formland Spring 2008 are the trend cafés: A World of Colours, Diva Lounge, and Aqua Lounge, as well as Wellness Lounge where visitors can take a break in the central corridor of Hall M.

Familiar brands in new FASHION area
FASHION is the latest step taken at Formland. The focus of the area is fashion and it offers popular brand-name products and collections in shoes, clothes, handbags, and jewellery, and much more. There are more than 50 companies in the FASHION area and among the exhibitors attending for the first time are Adax / Maanii by Adax, Balschmidt Agentur ApS, and Boasko A/S. The latter is the Danish agent for the well-known British shoe brand, Fly London.
“We have also previously had fashion exhibitors. We have now gathered them in a new, joint FASHION area. We have found that visitors are increasingly looking for fashion products. This makes it a natural development for Formland to expand with new exhibitors and product groups,” emphasises Lars Jespersen, MCH.

Trade fair centre with a new name
From 1 January 2008 the group behind Messecenter Herning changed names to MCH. This is part of the group’s vision and plan to become Scandinavia’s leading arranger of trade fairs, cultural arrangements and events. MCH comprises MCH Messecenter Herning, MCH Herning Kongrescenter and MCH SAS Arena.

The collaboration between Bang & Olufsen and Louis Vuitton continues with the introduction of a beautifully crafted leather holster for the latest music mobile from Bang & Olufsen and Samsung, Serenata.

Dressed in a sophisticated leather holster made of the most exquisite Nomade leather, Serenata rests in safe hands. Louis Vuitton has designed the leather holster in the Nomade leather series selected for some exceptional items of luggage, bags, shoes and accessories.

It is made of carefully selected cowhide leathers with a totally flawless surface. Tanned with plant extracts, natural cowhide leather develops an elegant copper-toned patina with time.

The lining is made of micro fibres, and the discretely stamped Louis Vuitton name at the bottom adds a final touch to the total impression of elegance and craftsmanship. The leather holster totally protects Serenata, yet leaves it open for easy operation and access to all the features of the music phone.

Louis Vuitton and Bang & Olufsen, loyal to the vision of their founders, share the same passion for innovation and modernity. From the start, both companies have established a tradition for creating state-of-the-art products that use the newest materials and technologies, while paying careful attention to elegance, beauty and craftsmanship.

The two companies have worked together now on several occasions, and a creative relationship based on a deep professional respect and an intense sense of affinity has evolved. Designers at Louis Vuitton already created an exclusive case for the Serene phone in 2005 and a holster for the BeoSound 2 digital MP3 player in 2004.

Serenata in its elegant leather holster will be on display at selected Bang & Olufsen retailers, and can be purchased in selected Louis Vuitton stores from November 2007.

- It´s important to look upon things from a new perspective and be given a push forward, which is exactly what the word boost means.

From 19 September 2007, Storefront for Art and Architecture will open its façade to a kaleidoscopic exhibition of Danish design manifested through the history, life, work and products of five Danish design brands; Bang & Olufsen (sound and vision), Fritz Hansen (furniture), Georg Jensen (jewelry and silverware), Louis Poulsen (lighting) and Royal Copenhagen (porcelain).

‘We’re very pleased to have the opportunity to host some of the all-time masterpieces of Danish design at Storefront this fall. Why do some items make the transition from fulfilling a basic function, such as listening to music or serving food, to becoming a work of art?

This exhibition will tell the fascinating story behind the genesis of these icons’, says Joseph Grima, Director for Storefront for Art and Architecture. The Danish creative studio Hz has curated the exhibition with the aim to let the artistic forces of Danish design be refracted through a prism. ‘When light hits a prism of crystal, the rays are refracted, gaining volume, color and shape. For literally hundreds of years, these companies have functioned as prisms that have invited designers, sculptors, architects and sound engineers to use their production facilities to create past, present and future icons’, states the Creative Director behind the exhibition, Jonas Hartz of Hz.

Bang & Olufsen, Fritz Hansen, Georg Jensen, Louis Poulsen and Royal Copenhagen each represent an angle of the phenomena of Danish design. The egg chair, the Henning Koppel silverware and the PH lamps, to mention a few, are all iconic products that have been created by visionaries with a deep interest in the relationship between man and object, the uncompromising craftsmanship and the timelessness of the right shape. In connection with the IKON exhibition, a limited edition book will be released to further the inside look into the heritage, the personal relationships, the production and the design philosophies behind these icons. The exhibition will equally interact with a curated program of cultural content, film and music, which will run from 19 to 28 September 2007.
